Best Time to Lay Turf in the UK
The best time to lay turf in the UK is autumn, from September to November, when the soil is warm and rainfall keeps the turf moist without constant watering. Spring, from March to April, is the second best window. Summer laying is possible but requires heavy watering, and winter laying risks the turf sitting on cold, waterlogged soil without rooting.

Why autumn is best for turfing
Warm soil encourages fast root establishment. Autumn rain reduces the need for irrigation. The turf has the entire winter and spring to establish before summer drought stress. By the following May, an autumn-laid lawn is well rooted and ready for regular mowing.
Spring laying works well too but requires more watering through late spring and early summer. The roots have less time to establish before the warmest, driest months arrive.
Turfing costs in Cambridge
Labour is £9 per m². Turf costs vary by supplier and grade but expect £3 to £6 per m² for a good quality amenity turf. A 50m² back garden would cost roughly £450 in labour plus £150 to £300 for turf. Site preparation, including removing old lawn and levelling, is quoted separately if needed.
