Preparation is most of the job
Turf laid over compacted or uneven ground fails no matter how good the turf was. Stripping the old lawn, levelling, grading and firming is the part that decides whether the new lawn takes.
Turf is laid tight with staggered joints and rolled in, so there are no gaps for the edges to dry out and shrink.
Turf or overseed?
Turf gives an instant lawn and suits bare or badly damaged ground. If the existing lawn is thin rather than dead, the renewal package at £200 per 100m², scarifying, aerating and overseeding, usually costs less and works just as well.
Worth asking before you pay for turf you may not need.

Autumn is best in Cambridgeshire, spring second. Both give warm soil and reliable rain while the roots establish. Summer turfing works but needs daily watering, and Cambridgeshire is one of the driest counties in the UK.
Keep off it for two to three weeks while the roots knit into the soil below. Light foot traffic after that, normal use after about six weeks. Walking on it early leaves depressions that stay visible for a season.
If the lawn is thin rather than dead, scarifying, aerating and overseeding at £200 per 100m² usually costs less than turfing and gives a comparable result. Turf makes sense on bare, badly damaged or newly built ground.
