Why is clay soil a problem for lawns?
Clay soil is made up of very fine particles that pack tightly together, leaving little space for air and water to move through. When wet, it becomes waterlogged and sticky. When dry, it cracks and hardens. Both conditions are stressful for grass roots. In Cambridge and much of Cambridgeshire, the underlying geology includes significant clay deposits, particularly in areas south and west of the city centre. Clay soil is not all bad: it is naturally fertile and retains nutrients well. The challenge is managing its structure so that grass roots can breathe, drain excess water, and access those nutrients. With the right management, clay soil can support an excellent lawn.
How to improve clay soil for grass
The most effective long-term improvement for clay soil under a lawn is regular aeration combined with organic matter. Hollow-tine aerate the lawn every autumn, removing small plugs of clay and top-dressing with sharp horticultural sand or a sand and compost mix. Over several years, this gradually improves the soil structure in the top 50 to 75 millimetres where grass roots are most active. Adding gypsum (calcium sulphate) can help break up clay particles without altering soil pH, though results take time. Avoid adding pure sand to clay without mixing it: sand and clay together without organic matter can create a concrete-like mixture. Always combine sand with compost or well-rotted organic matter when top-dressing.
Best grass seed for clay soil in the UK
For clay soils in the UK, choose a grass seed mix that includes perennial ryegrass and strong creeping red fescue. Ryegrass establishes quickly and tolerates the heavy, wet conditions that clay soil creates in winter. Red fescue adds density and handles the drier, harder surface that clay presents in summer. Avoid fine fescue-only mixes designed for sandy soils, as they struggle with the poor drainage of clay. Many seed suppliers sell mixes specifically labelled for heavy or clay soils. Sow at 25 to 35 grams per square metre in September for best results on clay, when the soil is warm but autumn rain provides natural irrigation without waterlogging.
