GRAVEL PATHS & AREAS

    Gravel Path Installation in Cambridge

ELawnCare installs gravel paths and gravel garden areas across Cambridge as part of its landscaping service, from a simple side-return path to a full front garden reworked in gravel with defined edging and borders. Every project is quoted after a free site visit, since the sub-base needed depends on the ground and how the area gets used.

A well-built gravel path lasts for years without shifting or growing weeds, and nearly all of that comes down to what goes underneath the gravel rather than the gravel itself.

Why the sub-base matters more than the gravel

A gravel path laid directly onto soil migrates, sinks and grows weeds within a season. A proper install excavates the path, lays a permeable membrane to block weeds while letting water drain through, adds a compacted sub-base of hardcore or scalpings, and only then spreads the decorative gravel on top.

Edging, whether timber, metal or stone, keeps the gravel contained along the path's line and stops it spreading into lawn or beds over time.

    Gravel versus other hard landscaping

Gravel is generally cheaper than patio tiling per square metre and drains rainwater more effectively, which suits informal paths, driveway areas and low-traffic garden zones well. For a main seating patio or a heavily used path, solid paving usually gives a more comfortable, stable surface underfoot.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    Frequently asked questions

Costs depend on the length, width and sub-base needed, so gravel paths are quoted after a free site visit rather than a flat per-metre rate. Materials, membrane, sub-base and gravel are shown separately from labour in the written quote.

Usually because there is no weed-suppressing membrane underneath, or the membrane has failed at an edge. Weeds establish directly in soil beneath loose gravel without one. A proper install with membrane and edging significantly reduces regrowth.

Generally yes, per square metre, and gravel drains rainwater better than solid paving. It suits informal paths and driveway areas well, though a solid surface is usually more comfortable underfoot for a main seating area or heavily used path.

Yes. Timber, metal or stone edging is fitted along the path line as standard, keeping the gravel contained and stopping it migrating into the lawn or beds either side over time.
