Moss in a lawn is a symptom, not the actual problem. It thrives where grass is weak, typically in compacted, shaded, poorly drained, or closely mown areas. Killing moss with ferrous sulphate or a lawn sand product is the first step, but unless you fix the underlying cause, it grows back within a season. Scarification after treatment removes the dead moss and opens the soil for overseeding.
ELawnCare treats moss as part of its lawn renewal service across Cambridge, priced at £200 per 100m² for a full treatment. The owner identifies why the moss is there and addresses the root cause, not just the visible growth.

Compacted soil prevents grass roots from developing, leaving gaps that moss fills. Shade from trees or buildings weakens grass. Poor drainage keeps the soil damp, which moss prefers. Cutting the lawn too short stresses the grass and gives moss an advantage. Low fertility soil also favours moss over grass.
Cambridge gardens on clay soil are particularly prone because clay compacts easily and drains slowly. Annual aeration in autumn is the best prevention for these gardens.
Apply ferrous sulphate or a moss killer product in spring or autumn. Wait two to three weeks for the moss to blacken and die. Scarify to remove the dead material. Overseed any bare patches. Top dress with a fine soil or compost. Water and avoid heavy traffic for three weeks while the seed establishes.
For heavy moss infestations, a second application of ferrous sulphate may be needed before scarification.
Apply a moss killer (ferrous sulphate or lawn sand) and wait two to three weeks. Scarify to remove dead moss. Overseed bare patches and top dress. Then fix the cause: aerate compacted soil, improve drainage, raise mowing height, or accept shade-tolerant grass seed in shaded areas.
Yes, unless you address the underlying cause. Moss returns to compacted, shaded, or poorly drained areas within a season if only the symptoms are treated. Annual aeration, proper mowing height, and overseeding with shade-tolerant varieties help prevent recurrence.
