Scarification looks destructive on the day. The lawn will look worse before it looks better, often for two to three weeks. But the dead layer sitting at the base of the grass is what stops water, air and feed reaching the roots, and removing it is the first step to a lawn that actually grows.

A thatch layer builds up naturally from dead grass, moss and organic debris. Up to about half a centimetre it is harmless. Beyond that it acts like a sponge, holding moisture at the surface, blocking air from the roots, and giving moss ideal conditions to spread.
Scarifying rakes this layer out, opening the surface so water drains through, air circulates, and fresh seed makes contact with soil rather than sitting on top of dead material.
September to mid-October is the prime window. Soil temperature is still warm from summer, autumn rain provides reliable moisture, and the grass has six to eight weeks of growing weather to fill in before winter.
March to April is the spring alternative. It works well in Cambridge but carries slightly more risk because the seed must establish before the dry summer. If you miss both windows, wait rather than scarifying in midsummer.
If the lawn has significant moss, it needs killing or weakening before scarification. Raking out live, vigorous moss spreads spores across the lawn and makes the problem worse. Iron sulphate or a proprietary moss killer applied two to three weeks before scarifying turns the moss black and makes it easy to rake out cleanly.

Yes, if there is significant moss. Raking out live moss spreads spores and worsens the problem. Apply a moss treatment two to three weeks before the scarification visit so the moss is dead and comes out cleanly during raking.
Two to three weeks before it stops looking worse, and roughly one to three weeks for new seed to germinate depending on soil temperature. Expect a visible improvement by the second month, not the second week. Patience is part of the process.
Keep foot traffic to a minimum for three to four weeks while the seed germinates and establishes. Light watering in dry spells helps the seed, but walking on soft, freshly scarified ground compresses the surface and undoes the aeration work.
