SEASONAL GUIDE

When to Aerate Your Lawn in the UK

The best time to aerate a UK lawn is autumn, ideally September to November, when the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Aeration relieves compaction, improves drainage, and allows air, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone. Spring aeration, from March to April, is a secondary option but less effective because it can disturb pre-emergent weed control.

ELawnCare offers aeration as part of lawn renewal across CB1 to CB25. Full renewal including aeration, scarification, overseeding, and top dressing is priced at £200 per 100m². Standalone aeration is quoted based on lawn size and condition.

    Signs your lawn needs aerating

Water pooling on the surface after rain is the clearest sign of compaction. Other indicators include moss growth, thin or bare patches, and soil that feels hard when you push a screwdriver into it. High-traffic areas, paths worn across the lawn, and clay soils are all more prone to compaction.

Most Cambridge gardens sit on clay or clay-loam soil, which compacts more than sandy soil. Annual aeration in autumn keeps these lawns healthy and prevents drainage problems through winter.

    How aeration works

Hollow-tine aeration removes small cores of soil, leaving holes that allow air and water to penetrate. Solid-tine aeration, using a fork or machine, pushes holes into the soil without removing material. Hollow-tine is more effective for compacted clay soils but takes longer to recover. Both methods are significantly better than doing nothing.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    Frequently asked questions

September to November is the best window for UK lawn aeration. The soil is moist enough for cores to come out cleanly, and the grass has time to recover before winter. Spring aeration from March to April is a backup option but is less effective overall.

Yes, using a garden fork pushed in 75mm to 100mm deep every 150mm across the lawn. For large areas or heavy clay, a hollow-tine aerator is much more effective and faster. ELawnCare uses professional equipment that covers a lawn quickly and consistently.
