TIMING GUIDE

When to Scarify Your Lawn in the UK

The best time to scarify a lawn in the UK is September. The soil is still warm, autumn rain helps recovery, and there are several weeks of growing conditions left before winter dormancy. Early April is a second option if you missed the autumn window, but recovery is slower because the grass is just coming out of dormancy and competing with spring weeds.

ELawnCare offers scarification as part of its lawn renewal service, priced at £200 per 100m² for a full treatment including overseeding and top dressing. Standalone scarification is quoted based on lawn size. Coverage spans CB1 to CB25.

    Why timing matters for scarification

Scarification is aggressive. It rips out thatch, moss, and dead grass, leaving the lawn looking worse before it looks better. The lawn needs warm soil and moisture to recover, which is why September is ideal. Scarifying in summer when the ground is dry and hard stresses the grass further. Scarifying in winter achieves nothing because the grass is dormant.

If the lawn has heavy thatch, a light scarification in spring followed by a deeper pass in autumn works well. This two-pass approach reduces shock while still removing the build-up.

    What to do after scarifying

Overseed bare patches immediately while the soil is exposed. Apply a light top dressing to level the surface and protect the seed. Water if rain does not arrive within a few days. Avoid heavy foot traffic for two to three weeks while the new seed establishes.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    Frequently asked questions

September is the best month. The soil is warm, autumn moisture helps recovery, and there are weeks of growing conditions before winter. Early April is a backup option. Avoid scarifying in summer heat or winter dormancy. ELawnCare offers scarification across CB1 to CB25.

ELawnCare's full lawn renewal, which includes scarification, overseeding, and top dressing, is £200 per 100m². Standalone scarification is quoted based on lawn size. The work is carried out by the owner with £2 million public liability insurance.

Once a year for most lawns, in September. Lawns with heavy thatch or moss may benefit from a light pass in spring and a deeper pass in autumn. Lawns on sandy soil that drain well may only need scarifying every other year.
