A bumpy lawn usually comes from one of two causes: shallow dips left by settled ground, worn-out turf joints or old tree roots, or raised humps from tree roots pushing up, worm casts building over years, or ground that was never properly graded before the original turf went down.
Small dips under about 2cm are fixed with topdressing, a fine mix of soil brushed into the surface over several applications through the growing season. Bigger humps and hollows need the turf lifted, the ground underneath regraded, and the turf relaid.

A sandy loam topdressing mix is spread thinly over the lawn and worked into the surface with the back of a rake or a stiff broom, filling shallow dips gradually. One application rarely does the whole job on an uneven lawn; two or three passes across a season, each a few millimetres thick, level things out without smothering the grass.
This is the low-disruption option and suits lawns that are otherwise healthy but have minor undulations from years of mowing and foot traffic.
Where humps or hollows are more than a couple of centimetres, the turf needs lifting in sections, the soil underneath reshaped and firmed, and the turf relaid tight with the joints staggered. This is proper groundwork rather than a surface fix, and it is the only reliable answer for lawns with genuine slopes or root damage underneath.
Mowing height also matters while you wait: cutting a bumpy lawn too low scalps the high points and leaves them bare, which makes the unevenness look worse than it is.
