For minor bumps, apply a sandy loam topdressing in thin layers over two or three visits through the growing season, working it into the surface with a rake or broom. For humps or dips over about 2cm, the turf needs lifting, the ground regraded, and the turf relaid.

Settled ground under new turf, worm casts accumulating over years, tree roots pushing up from below, and poor ground preparation before the original lawn was laid are the most common causes. Heavy foot traffic in wet weather also compacts and displaces soil unevenly over time.

Raise the mower height slightly until the lawn is levelled. Cutting at the normal height on an uneven surface scalps the high spots, leaving bare patches that make the unevenness more visible and give weeds an easy way in.
