Summer Lawn Care in Cambridge
Summer is the most demanding period for Cambridge lawns. Growth peaks in May and June, requiring weekly mowing to keep on top of it. Through July and August, heat and dry spells slow growth, and fortnightly cuts usually suffice. The key is never removing more than a third of the blade height in a single cut, which prevents stress, yellowing, and scalping.

Summer mowing schedule
May and June: weekly cuts at 25mm to 30mm for a fine lawn, 30mm to 40mm for a family lawn. July: move to fortnightly if growth slows in dry weather. August: fortnightly, raising the height slightly if drought stress is visible. September: continue fortnightly as growth picks up with autumn rain.
During extended dry spells, raise the mowing height to 40mm. Taller grass shades the soil, reduces moisture loss, and copes better with drought. Never scalp a drought-stressed lawn.
Watering and feeding
Water established lawns only during extended drought, and then deeply and infrequently rather than little and often. A single thorough soak once a week is better than daily sprinkling. Feed in June with a summer lawn feed if the grass looks pale or thin.
