Lawn and Garden Maintenance in Cambridge

A standard visit is the cut itself, cuttings raked up, and the garden left tidy. Edging along paths, fences and beds is a £12 add-on per visit rather than part of the base rate. Taking the cuttings away is a separate £12 per visit, and is only needed when your green bin has no room. Both are optional, both are agreed before the first visit, and neither appears on an invoice you did not ask for.

Hedges run on their own schedule at £4 per metre up to 2 metres and £8 per metre above, usually two cuts a year rather than every visit. Beds and borders are hand weeded at £28 an hour with a one hour minimum, roots-out, with no weedkiller used anywhere in the garden. Flower beds are £25 per bed, or £5 per m² on larger beds.

Not covered on a maintenance visit: tree work and anything needing to be cut above hedge height, chemical lawn or weed treatments, and removing building or household waste. Those are either a different trade or a separately quoted job, and saying so up front is more use to you than finding out on the day.

A one-off visit suits a garden before visitors arrive, at the end of a tenancy, or as a trial before committing to anything. A regular round suits a garden you would rather stop thinking about: the same person, a consistent day, and a lawn that never gets far enough ahead to need rescuing.

Through the growing season, roughly March to October, most Cambridge lawns want cutting every one to two weeks, and fortnightly suits the majority. Weekly is worth it in May and June when growth peaks. Through winter visits drop to monthly or pause entirely, with a tidy-up before spring.

If the garden is currently too far gone for a normal visit, a clearance is the sensible starting point and routine visits take over afterwards.

A monthly plan is a billing and scheduling arrangement, not a fixed number of visits. You agree the frequency the garden needs, and the eligible recurring maintenance on that plan is charged at 10% off the published rate. Frequency and plan are separate decisions: a fortnightly round is still fortnightly whether or not it is billed monthly.

The 10% applies to recurring maintenance: mowing, edging, hedge trimming and routine weeding. It does not apply to project work priced by quote, which includes turfing, fencing, patios, jet washing and the lawn renewal package. The £40 minimum visit is unchanged by being on a plan, and there is no fixed-term contract to sign.

Send your postcode, the approximate lawn area in square metres, and a couple of photographs: one of the garden, one of the way into it. Rough paces across and along the lawn are close enough if you have never measured it. Say which of edging, cuttings disposal, hedges and bed weeding you actually want, and the quote comes back itemised.

Access decides more than people expect. A mower has to get through the gate and down the side of the house, so mention the width of the narrowest point, any steps, and whether the side gate can be left unlocked. You do not need to be home if there is access. Beyond 8 miles from Cambridge, travel is confirmed in the quote at either £25 flat or 50p per mile, whichever you prefer.
